Understanding EV Efficiency: Miles per kWh Explained
The New MPG: Miles per kWh
For decades, we've measured vehicle efficiency in Miles Per Gallon (MPG). In the EV world, the standard metric is Miles per Kilowatt-hour (mi/kWh).
What is a Kilowatt-hour (kWh)?
A kWh is a unit of energy. It's the same unit you see on your home electricity bill. EV battery capacities are measured in kWh (e.g., a 75 kWh battery).
Good vs. Bad Efficiency
- 2.0 - 2.5 mi/kWh: Low efficiency (typical for large electric trucks or heavy SUVs).
- 3.0 - 3.5 mi/kWh: Average efficiency (typical for electric crossovers and standard sedans).
- 4.0+ mi/kWh: High efficiency (typical for aerodynamic, lightweight EVs like the Tesla Model 3 or Lucid Air).
Calculating Range
If you have a 70 kWh battery and your car averages 3.5 mi/kWh, your estimated range is 245 miles (70 * 3.5). Understanding this metric is crucial for using our EV vs Gas calculator accurately.
